On November 11, the Geographical Dictation took place in the SSU Big Physical Hall. The event has become traditional for our university. Being the biggest platform in Saratov SSU has hosted it for four years. More than 200 participants – SSU administration, professors and students as well as citizens – wrote the dictation there, while professors and students of the Faculty of Geography moderated it.
In 2018 the international project has become educational.
The audience was welcomed by Chair of the Department of Economic and Social Geography A.V. Molochko.
‘We, the representatives of Saratov University and the Russian Geographical Society, are glad that so many people who are interested in geography have come here. The RGS has organized the dictation since 2015. Today it will be held in more than 3,000 platforms in more than 80 countries. Due to this unique educational project people from different Russian regions are encouraged to broaden their knowledge about their own country and the world. Other countries join us, and it is very pleasant,’ underlined Anna Vyacheslavovna.
Dean of the Faculty of Geography, Chair of the RGS Saratov Division V.Z. Makarov marked that geography is an important science as it influences different spheres of life. Moreover, if people are interested in geography they definitely widen their horizons.
‘This year we asked the Presidium of the RGS Academic Council to include questions about regions as well,’ commented Vladimir Zinovyevich.
And that initiative was supported.
Also new members of the Russian Geographical Society were ceremonially given their membership cards: Honoured Citizen of the Saratov Region, Honoured Master of Sports in mountaineering, Master of Sports (International Class), the Snow Leopard awardee, and the summiteer of 13 out of 14 eight-thousanders S.G. Bogomolov; Senior Nursery School Teacher of Nursery School №210 E.V. Kuznetsova; activists of the Youth Club of the RGS Saratov Division; students of the Faculty of Geography Aleksandr Mikhailov, Anastasia Spiryakhina, and Anastasia Khuraseva.
After that the dictation participants were addresse4d by Vice-Rector for Administrative Work and Human Resources Management A.V. Stalmakhov.
‘This year the questions are non-standard. Try to demonstrate your knowledge and quick understanding. I think it will be interesting. Good luck to you!’
The tasks were connected with different domains of geography. Many participants answered the questions very quickly.
The dictation members can find out their individual results on the site of the RGS project using their participants’ I.D. after November 30.
Before the dictation SSU Rector A.N. Chumachenko congratulated the Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University on the 80th anniversary. He wrote the 2018 Geographical Dictation in Moscow State University where he had graduated from.
