True Love to Sports: Shpitalnyi Dynasty

The life, studies and professional activities of the Shpitalnyi sports and pedagogical dynasty are inextricably linked with Saratov University. Several generations of this family left the walls of the SSU and linked their lives with Saratov and the Sokol football club. Evgenia Nikolaevna Shpitalnaya teaches physical education at Saratov University. She was born on June 21, 1946 in Saratov. In 1968, she graduated with honors from the French department of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Saratov Pedagogical Institute, and in 1975 – the State Central Order of Lenin Institute of Physical Culture in Moscow (today – the Russian University of Sports "GTSOLIFK"). During her studies, she met football player Vadim Petrovich Shpitalny and married him.

Evgenia Nikolaevna developed an active interest in sports back in school: in pioneer camps, she won prizes at athletics competitions. As a student, she became the captain of the volleyball team, and after receiving her diploma, she worked for a short time as a coach at a factory.

"I realized that I couldn't live without my alma mater. In 1989, my soul attracted me to the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, where I have been working for many years," notes Evgenia Nikolaevna.

After the early death of V.P. Shpitalny at the age of 53, Evgenia Nikolaevna raised her son Vadim and daughter Tatiana.

"After my husband's death, I gave my word that the children would receive a good education and graduate from our university. The tradition was continued: after my husband and I, my son, daughter, grandson and granddaughter received a diploma from SSU. All of them, except for their daughter, who received a diploma from the Faculty of Philology, graduated from the Institute of Physical Culture and Sports. I am very proud of this achievement of our family," notes Evgenia Nikolaevna.

E.N. Shpitalnaya started working at the Department of Sports Games as an assistant, then as a senior lecturer. The head of the department, Yevgeny Ivanovich Krishtal, was a mentor to the young teacher, helped her conduct volleyball classes first, and then a course of lectures. E.I. Krishtal himself taught at the faculty for more than 30 years, taught students gymnastics.

"It was then that I realized that I had a desire to be a teacher. It's like I'm attracted to the university every day. I can't sit around, I can't do without work. After every weekend, I look forward to meeting with my colleagues and students, communication with them brings me sincere pleasure," says Evgenia Nikolaevna.

Until 2012, Evgenia Nikolaevna coached the men's and women's university volleyball teams for 20 years.

Today, E.N. Shpitalnaya is an associate professor of the Department of Sports Games, Secretary of the IFKiS Academic Council. She teaches courses on volleyball, physical education and wellness technologies and scientific and methodological activities in sports. Since 2000, under the scientific supervision of E.N. Shpitalnaya, more than a dozen undergraduate students have left the university. Evgenia Nikolaevna's students keep warm memories of university life and still keep in touch with her.
